The thing with first dates is they can be pretty awkward. I am sure you have been able to spot a couple on their first date at least once based on how nervous they appear. Normally, both of them usually appear well groomed sitting across one another. Then you see them stealing stares at one another.

But what really gives them away is the silence! "How is the food"? One of them asks. "It's great. Yours?" "Great too." Then more silence follows. You can hear their folks and knives as they struggle to eat right. You can see them struggling with their minds as they try to find the right words to say.

First dates don't have to be this torturous. They are meant to be fun. And done well, a first date can be a great start to some great loving. But if you let the jitters get the best of you, it will go downhill.

The best way to handle this is to try and be as relaxed as possible; both in poise and in the conversation. And this all boils down to the kind of questions you ask your date. Well, this can be quite tricky. Some questions may be too invasive and too personal for a first date. However, asking the right questions can guarantee a second date. It can be a great start to a wonderful relationship.

Here are a few questions to help you sail through:

Where are you from? This is one great conversation starter. And in case you happen to know where your date is from, you can ask them where they were born or where they grew up.

Do you have siblings?

What do you like doing on weekends? This is the perfect ice breaker. This question helps you learn a lot about your date. How someone spends their free time says a lot about them. It's also a great way to know what both of you can do in case you get a second date.

Do you drink? Great follow up question. And if they do, ask them what their favorite drink is.

What is your favorite movie? This will help you know what genre of movies your date is into. And if he or she loves movies, the conversation will definitely develop into the latest movie they watched. You could also throw in a question about books. Ask about the last book he or she read.

What is your dream car? If this question is directed to a man, then this will surely get him talking.

Do you like traveling? If they do, you get the chance to ask them their favorite vacation spot and where they visited last. Ask what your date loves about the place.

What inspires you? Whom do you admire?

What makes you nervous? You will get a peek into what makes your date vulnerable if they care to open up about this.

What is on your bucket list? Definitely interesting.

The above are just but a few questions to ask. But I am sure these give you a feel of the questions to ask on a first date.

This is certainly inspirational. First time conversations can be really nerve wrecking... Especially if you don't know what's right to say.
